Why visit Tanzania
Tanzania scales up everything Kenya does. The Serengeti is roughly four times the size of the Maasai Mara, with year-round migration somewhere in the ecosystem. The Ngorongoro Crater is a self-contained game-viewing amphitheatre. Tarangire delivers baobab-studded elephant landscapes. And Zanzibar is the region's most atmospheric beach destination, with Stone Town's Swahili heritage and powder-white northern beaches.
Best time to visit Tanzania
June to October is the prime dry safari season. Calving in the southern Serengeti peaks late January–February — one of Africa's great wildlife spectacles. Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti run July–September. Zanzibar is best June–October and December–February; avoid the long rains (March–May).
Top parks and regions
Serengeti National Park (migration, big cats), Ngorongoro Crater (dense game, rhino), Tarangire (elephants, baobabs), Lake Manyara, Ruaha and Selous/Nyerere (remote southern circuit). Mount Kilimanjaro for trekkers. Zanzibar Archipelago — Stone Town, Nungwi, Kendwa, Paje, Mnemba — for the beach finale.
Tanzania safari cost
Mid-range northern circuit safaris cost USD 500–800 per person per night all-inclusive; luxury Serengeti camps run USD 1,500–3,000+. A classic 7-day northern circuit (Tarangire + Ngorongoro + Serengeti) is USD 5,500–9,000 per person mid-range. Zanzibar adds USD 200–400/night mid-range or USD 800–1,500/night luxury.
Suggested itineraries
7 days: Arusha → Tarangire → Ngorongoro → Serengeti. 10 days: same circuit + 3 nights Zanzibar. 14 days: northern circuit + Zanzibar + Pemba or Mafia. Adventure: 8-day Kilimanjaro Machame route + 4 nights Zanzibar recovery.
Visa, vaccines and entry
Tanzania issues an eVisa (USD 50 standard, USD 100 for US passports) at eservices.immigration.go.tz. Yellow fever certificate required if arriving from a yellow-fever country. Anti-malarials recommended. Arrive into Kilimanjaro (JRO) for the northern circuit, Zanzibar (ZNZ) for the islands, or Dar es Salaam (DAR).
